First Nations Media Australia serves as the national peak body for First Nations non-profit broadcasting, media, and communications.
Established in 2001 to represent remote Indigenous media and communications, we expanded in 2016/17 to become the representative body for First Nations media services across the country – IRCA.
First Nations-managed media and communications are essential services in our communities. They offer vital information that is locally relevant, support health and well-being, provide employment opportunities, and help strengthen cultural identity. These services are key to fostering social and economic development in First Nations communities. While community radio broadcasting remains at the core of our industry, First Nations media has evolved into a dynamic and diverse field, encompassing radio, film, television, print, online, and mobile platforms.
Historically, First Nations media has played an important role in preserving language and culture, promoting self-representation, and contributing to community development.
As we continue to advocate for digital inclusion and access to media services, we understand the importance of working collaboratively across Australia. Together, we can address challenges and create innovative solutions, building a powerful and connected vision for generations to come.
